The West African Examination Board (WAEC) is an Examination body that conducts the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in June/July and the General Certificate of Education (GCE) in November/December.

According to the 2018 West African Examination Board (WAEC) timetable, WAEC GCE 2018 Physics Practical Examination is scheduled to hold on;

Wednesday 5th September 2018

Physics 3 (Alternative to Practical Work) 2hrs 45mins 08:30 hrs. – 11:15 hrs.

WAEC GCE Physics Practical Questions 2018

The physics practical is usually divided into 3 questions (comprising of Mechanics, Waves and Electricity) with a few other general knowledge calculations.

QUESTION 1:

Study the diagrams above and use them as guides in carrying out the following instructions
(i) Using the spring balance provided, determine the weight of the object of mass M = 50.0g in the air. Record this weight as W1

(ii) Determine the weight of the object when it iv completely immersed in water contained in a beaker at shown in the diagram above Record the weight W2

(iii) Determine the weight of the object when it Is completely immersed in the liquid labelled L. Record the weight as W3

(iv) Evaluate U= (W1-W2) and V= (W1 – W3)

(v) Repeat the procedure with the objects of masses M= 1OOg, 15O g, 200 g and 250 g

(vi) In each case, evaluate U= (W1-W2) and V= (W1 – W3)

Tabulate your readings. Plot a graph with V on the vertical axis and U on the horizontal axis. Determine the slopes, of the graph.

State two precautions are taken to ensure accurate results

(b) (i) State Archimedes’ principle
(ii) A piece of brass of mass 20.0g is hung on a spring balance from a rigid support and completely immersed in kerosene of density 8.0 x 102 kgm\Determine the reading on the spring balance.

QUESTION 2:

You are provided with a beaker, a thermometer, a stirrer, stopwatch/clock, measuring cylinder, table salt, water and other necessary materials.

Measure 200 cm3 of water into the beaker. Heat the water until it boils steadily for about 2 minutes. Read and record the boiling point b0.

Add table salt of mass M = 10.0 g to the boiling water and stir continuously until another boiling point b| is attained. Read and record bi. Evaluate 0 = . (bi -b0)

Using the same mixture, repeat the procedure four more times by adding 10.0 g of salt each time to give the cumulative mass Mj of salt as 20 g’ 30 g’ 40 g and 50g.

In each case allow the mixture to boil steadily for at least 2 minutes then read and record the boiling point bi.

Tabulate your readings. Plot a graph with M| on the vertical axis and 0{ on the horizontal axis. Determine the slope, s, of the graph.

State two precautions are taken to ensure accurate results

(b) (i) Define the boiling point of a liquid.
(ii)What effect do impurities have on the boiling point of a liquid?

QUESTION 3:

You are provided with a potentiometer, an ammeter, a voltmeter, standard resistor and other necessary apparatus. Using the circuit diagram above as a guide, carry out the following instructions.

Set up a circuit as illustrated in the diagram above. Close the key, K.

Read and record the ammeter reading l0 and the voltmeter      reading V0 when     jockey J is not making contact with the potentiometer wire OQ

Using J, make a contact with the potentiometer wire OQ at a point P such that OP = 10 cm. Read and record the current I and the corresponding value of the voltage V. Repeat the procedure for other values of OP = 20 cm, 30cm, 40 cm, 50 cm, and 60cm.

Tabulate your readings. Plot a graph with V on the vertical axis and I on the horizontal axis, starting both axes from the origin (0,0).

Determine the slope, s, of the graph. Determine the value of V when I = 0.

State two precautions are taken to obtain accurate results.

(b) (i) State two advantages of a lead-acid accumulator over a dry Leclanche cell.
(ii) A cell of emf 2V and internal resistance of IQ passes current through an external load
of 9Q. Calculate the potential drop across the cell.
